Winner of the NAHEMI Extraordinary Times award 2020, Coronavirus and our Community is a short film directed by Lucy Gatenby and produced by Rebecca Hardess, commissioned by the BBC in mid 2020.

The film was based around a poem written by Matt Harvey, and illustrates the impact of COVID-19 on our communities, emphasising both their strengths and weaknesses. It had a remarkably quick turnaround from concept to finish, of about five weeks total.

The film is animated in 2D with a mixture of hand-drawn animation produced in TVPaint and 2D compositing in Adobe After Effects.

I worked as both a key artist and inbetweener for this film. Although I only had the opportunity to work on two shots, as the quick five week turnaround for the film ended up clashing with my house move.

Due to the film's quick production schedule, the desired animation style was fairly limited. To ensure that quality of movement was not sacrificed by this decision, I worked to emphasise follow through in the secondary action, including swinging and bobbing hair and feet.

I am very pleased to have been able to work on this film, and I am proud of the work I completed, being both the opening shot and the shot chosen as the cover photo for the BBC news articles.

Coronavirus and our Community premiered on BBC Spotlight SouthWest on the 12th June 2020, and can now be watched online:
